Pre-requisites : Pupils would have completed PETS Coursebook 5A , Pages 92 - 94

and PETS Vocabulary Worksheets 1 and 2.

To use theme-related words in different context.
To select the correct meaning of a word.

Learning & Teaching Materials

1. Title of Courseware : Word Attack

Type : Game and Tutorial

Characteristics :

The CD-ROM contains more than 4 000 vocabulary words, definitions and sentences grouped into different categories such as People, Religions, Music, Environment.

The words are also grouped by parts of speech ( verbs, nouns and adjectives ) and difficulty level.
The time control feature enables you to adjust the time ( from 1 to 60 minutes ) to play a game or an activity.
There are 4 different easy-to-follow games : The Maze Game, Tile Game, Crossword Puzzle and The Slime Game. All of which help to reinforce the lesson on learning new words.
You can create your own custom lists using the Editor.

Pupils get acquainted with the new words and self-evaluation can be achieved by atttempting the games , crossword puzzles or even the teacher-made tests.
Here, pupils’ knowledge can be reinforced in a non-threatening , fun and enjoyable learning environment.

Learning Environment : A fully equipped computer laboratory with 44 multi-media computers and printers.

Instructional Strategies :

1. Select Start from the Windows 95 Taskbar, then search through

Programs\Ulimate Work Attack and select the Ultimate Word Attack icon.

2. To register as a new student : Type pupil’s name in the Name dialog box.

Click OK.

3. Pupils will use the Editor to select the words on Appendix 1.

4. At the Main Screen, click the Editor button or select Editor from the File

menu. The word entry screen will appear.
5. Select New from the Editor’s File menu. (You must select New or Open to

start using the Editor.) Replace * with your own file name and click OK.

6. The cursor will appear in the Word field. The student is now ready to

select the words.

7. Click on the Select button and type in the first word ‘abandon’ on Appendix 1

and press Enter .

8. Select Add from the Edit menu and complete the rest of the 19 words.

For each word, remind pupils that they must read silently its

definition and the 2 sentences.

9. When the pupils have finished, exit the Editor by selecting Return

from the Editor’s File menu.

10. Select Custom from the Word List menu. Select the filename from the dialog box and select The Presentation Activity which contains a

series of challenging word scrambles.

11. Here, pupils can perform a self reinforcement and evaluation of the lesson. Click on either Solve or Complete Sentence to play the game.

12. How to play : Refer to the definition and sentence below the scrambled

word for clues. To unscramble the word, just click on each tile and

move it to the tier below the scrambled word, until the correct word is

spelt. Press Enter .

13. To consolidate the lesson, pupils must complete Worksheets 1 to 4

( Appendix 2 ) containing the 20 vocabulary words created from the

file.
