Subject : Mathematics

Topic : 4 operations of decimal

Level : Primary 4

Duration : 2 Periods

Pre-requisites

1. Pupils are to be familiar with adding, subtracting & multiplying decimals.

2. Pupils are able to divide

- up to 2 decimal places with a whole number

- a whole number with a whole number

3. Pupils to be able to do estimation of decimals up to 1 decimal place

Specific Instructional objectives

Pupils are to

1. Estimate a decimal and

2. To select the correct values to add up to a whole number

Thinking skills

1. Identify patterns and relationships - Parts - Whole

2. Creative problem solving

Learning and teaching materials

1. Title of courseware: Math Blaster 9-12

2. Worksheet

3. Workbook: Primary Mathematics 4B, Part Two (Ex 51)

4. Envelope consisting of 5 different shapes

5. OHT - Place value table

- Picture Cut-outs

Learning environment

1. Half computer laboratory

Instructional Strategies

Get the class to form groups of four. Divide half the group into 'A' and the other into 'B'.

1. Recapitulate division of decimals with students, especially in a whole number

divided by another whole number.

- Give divisions sums and get students to work it out.

- After completing sums, they are to exchange it with their peers.

- Select a few students to come forward to show solution in place-value

format.

2. Introduce estimation of up to 1 decimal place in division.

- Get students to round off the sums they did earlier to 1 decimal place.

3. Explain to the pupils that they are going to identify the number of parts to make

up a whole number found in the courseware, Math Blaster 9-12.

- Demonstrate how to sign-in

- Select the 'Bridge Builder'

- Select 'Add Decimals to the tenths and hundredths'

- Demonstrate by modeling how to solve the first 2 problems

4. Get Group 'A's to navigate the software and record their thinking processes on a

worksheet (pair work, one recorder, one navigator).

- Get group 'B's to start with workbook Ex 51 (part 2).
