Instructional Strategies

( Introduction : 10 mins )

  1. With a LCD projector, flash a picture of the penguin on the screen. Get

pupils to respond to the following questions :

  1. When the Singapore Zoo brought in some of the penguins, what
  2. did the zoo officers do to the enclosure ? ( airconditioned the enclosure and prepared a pool )

  3. Why was this done for the penguins ? ( they live in cold countries and

can swim very well )

c) How is the penguin able to survive ? ( thick coat of feathers, layer of

fat, has flippers instead of wings etc. )

  1. Flash pictures of other animals and get pupils to share with the class how
  2. these animals are able to survive in their natural habitat.

     

    ( Development of lesson : 35 mins )

  3. Introduce and define the term adaptation
  4. Show pupils how to get into the relevant parts of the courseware.
  5. Distribute worksheets ( with instructions ) to the pupils . Get the class to read through them for 5 minutes. Go through the worksheet to clarify any points which pupils may have difficulties with.
  6. Pair pupils up. ( Strategy : Think-Pair-Share )
  7. Distribute to them the courseware Tutor-On-Demand Part 3 and give each
  8. pair about 20 minutes to their research.

  9. At the end of 20 minutes, get each pair to verify their findings with each other, allowing them 5 minutes to do so.
  10.  

    ( Closure of lesson : 10 minutes )

  11. Elicit responses from pupils to questions based on their findings.

10. Conclude the lesson by getting pupils to read up the adaptive features of

aquatic and land animals from their Science textbook ( pages - ).

  9. To end session, click on " Close " ( top right side of screen ). Shutdown of system in the usual manner.
