Instructional Materials: CD-ROM: Random House Kid's Encyclopedia

Pre-requisites: Pupils are able to navigate a program using icons on the screen.

Specific Instructional Objectives:

    1. Pupils to master basic research skills using an encyclopedia courseware: Random House Kid's Encyclopedia.
    2. Pupils to read about various sports and games played worldwide to widen their knowledge of the topic.

Thinking Skills:

    1. Acquiring and integrating knowledge.
    2. Comparing and contrasting information/data read.

Activity:

    1. Teacher to explain how to navigate the CD-ROM: Random House Kid's encyclopedia and explain the assignment worksheet given.
    2. Pupils to navigate in pairs and look for the information required in the worksheet (Part A)
    3. Pupils to work individually to complete the inferential questions in the worksheet. (Part B)

Follow-up Activity:

1) Teacher goes through and discusses the answers to pupils' worksheet.

2) Pupils to pretend they took part in a match or game (one of the sports they have read) and write an essay based on it e.g. An Exciting Match!

Guidelines on use of the CD-ROM Random House Kid's Encyclopedia.

  1. Insert the CD-Rom marked "REFERENCE" of the above title.
  2. Select ENGLISH and click on icon KE (Kid's Encyclopedia).
  3. Click on "FACT-O-RAY" in the SHORTCUTS option on the main menu.
  4. Click on "A - Z" option in the Fact - O - Ray screen.
  5. Select the letter required (A to Z) and click to reveal an alphabetical list of topics under the letter selected.
  6. Click on the required topic. Where an icon shows a video camera, click on it to see a video clip on the sport. Click also on the "MORE" icon if there is one, to read more about the sport.
  7. To exit, click on the figure at the bottom right of screen, to get back to the main menu.
  8. At the main menu, click on EXIT.
