Learning and Teaching Materials
1. Title of Courseware: Creative Writer
2. Textbook: PETS Coursebook 2B
3. Some balloons and a party hat.
Learning Environment: Half laboratory
Instructional Strategies:
Introduction (8 minutes)
- Teacher to make some noise using a noise maker and to hold a party balloon. Teacher to then ask the class what do they think they are going to do today. Pupils will reply that they are going to have a party.
- Teacher to lead pupils to think that before anyone has any party, the organizers must plan certain things including a menu, the number of guests, games to play, entertainment like a magician for example, music, decorations and so on. Inform pupils that they are going to plan a menu for a surprise party for a friend. They must take note that their plan is for 10-15 people only. It could be a barbecue or just an indoor party.
Pair Sharing (10minutes)
- Using Think-Pair-Share now, give pupils 2 minutes to think what kind of party they would like to have and some of the food they would include. When this time is up, pupils are given 5 minutes to discuss with one another. Teacher to call upon certain groups to share with the class.
Development- Creating Our Menu (27 minutes)
- Teacher calls upon the two IT monitors to distribute the CD ROMs. Teacher to explain some of the functions of Creative Writer which include the changing of colour of the letters, the different backdrops which can be found, borders and how to present the menu in a 'centered format'. Pupils to learn how to print their finished menu but only after approval by the teacher.
- Now, the actual 'hands on' with the CD ROM Creative Writer takes place.
- Teacher goes round to assist pupils with any queries.
- When pupils are done, teacher to check finished work before allowing pupils to print. Pupils who have finished early may start on a second piece which is to plan the games they may want have for the party which they are planning.
Sharing and Wrapping Up Of Lesson (10 minutes)
- Some pairs who have finished are chosen to share their "menu's" with the class. The rest of the class can give their suggestions to make any improvements if necessary.
Lastly teacher to wrap up lesson and to remind pupils that planning is very important to any function. Without proper planning, complications may occur and it would be very embarrassing for the host if there was too little food or it would be wasteful to throw away leftovers.
