     vvv
Keindahan adalah apa yang menarik jiwa,
Kepadanya cinta diberikan dan bukan diminta.

        v

v

Alangkah jauhnya aku dari orang-orang ketika aku bersamanya, dan alangkah dekatnya ketika mereka jauh.
Mempercayai adalah satu hal, melakukan adalah hal lain. Banyak orang berbicara seperti laut tetapi kehidupan mereka bagaikan rawa-rawa yang diam. Yang lain-lainnya menaikkan kepala mereka mengatasi puncak gunung, sementara jiwa-jiwa mereka menggelantungi dinding-dinding gua yang gelap.

v

vvv

Jiwa Barat adalah teman kita bila kita menerima dia, tetapi musuh kita bila kita dimabukkannya; teman kita jika kita membuka hati kepadanya, musuh kita ketika kita menyerahkan kepadanya hati-hati kita; teman kita bila kita mengambil dari apa-apa yang menyenangkan kita, musuh kita bila kita biarkan diri kita dipakai untuk menyenangkan dia.
                                                  (Kahlil Gibran)

vvv

Seseorang berkata:

“ I’m sick.
No one cares about me ?
I hope not !
- My mother cares.
- My father cares.
- My brothers care.
- My sisters care.

Am I lonely ?
I’m not !  I’m sure.
I have many one in my heart.
But do they care about me ?
There is a big doubt in my heart.”
Tapi dia tidak tahu apa artinya.

Any Town

Any town is lonely
After Paris –
New York, London,
Buenos Aires;

Any town,
Anywhere,
When lamps blossom
In the air,

And children playing
In the street
See night flowing
Past their feet.
vvv
Spring, 1942

Farewell, four walls no longer home,
I go whence I may never come,
But should I come it will not be
To these white walls that sheltered me,
With blues and yellows in brown frames,
And rank on rank of the dear names
Marshalled against the ills of men;
And, never to be greeted again,
Girl with the dream on your face,
This verse be your abiding place.

The thin trees trembled in the Square,
Washed with green and gold and air,
And shy with buds that hung like veils,
Or gingko branches like pigtails,
With smallest leaves on either side;
Trapped in a window the sun died;
The streets run embers to the west.
Farewell, I thought, to all that’s best.

White walls and greening Square, farewell;
I go from you as from a spell,
To fight for those who never had
Anything to make them glad;
And such sweet husbandry is this,
My heart at length has armistice.

  vvv

The Ordinary Men

 Heroes are overcome,
But these will never yield –
The ordinary men
From factory and field.

The shy of heart are here,
The strong heart and sure,
Who, sullen under arms,
Will know how to endure.

Beyond the bitter sea,
Under the foeman’s wall,
The shy of heart will stand,
The sure heart will fall.

väv

On Hearing Gossip About Himself

I am sure that every one
Can order my affairs
Better than I have done,
As they have theirs.

  vvv

To see perfection sharp

To see perfection sharp,
Abstract and structural,
Hold out your hand to catch
The littlest stars that fall.

In orbits of the palm,
A little heaven they lie,
Stars that feather and fade,
Lost now to earth and sky.

  vvv

Palimpsets

The older the town,
The thicker the stone
Wind didn’t wear down,
Time left alone.

The older the town,
The bigger the load
To tumble it down
And smother town, road,

Orchard and lane
That stood on rain,
And meadows sown
With seed and bone.

The walls are thick,
And so’s man’s skin,
Although he’s quick
 To cave things in.

Lean guns mutter,
Stiff bomb sprout;
The cities gutter
And go out.

The men who built
Dissolve to silt
Under the strown
Acres of stone.

vvv

The Snow Comes Down

The snow comes down;
It is as though
God said: I will cover
The earth with snow.

I will cover the earth
In quiet white;
It won’t take more
Than a day or a night;

And the earth will turn
To an older plan,
As it was before
The coming of man;

As it was before
Man trod the ground,
And the earth sang
As it went around.

vvv

The Lake

Massed green and silences
Stand guard around the lake;
Maple and the pensive pine
Both shade and shadow make.

Through windows of the wood,
Glooms and gold are seen,
Long boughs were lightfall lies,
Massed silences and green.

Bright-thighed birch and beech
Crowd down upon the shore,
To wade out of the wood,
Loving the lake more.

The water lies to still,
It could be shadow there
Of the still, blue sky
And the still, white air.

Over its placid depth,
A single bird glides past;
Within its shaded deep
Lie fish like shadows cast.

The water is so still,
It lies like silence there,
The silence of the wood
The treads its soft air.

Thin as ferns and fronds,
The woodland settles down,
Drowned in that still pool,
Where stars will stream and down.
