According to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. the depth of poverty in America remained unchanged between 1999 and 2000, but in both years, the average poor person fell further below the poverty line than at any time since 1979. In addition, income disparities between high-income and middle- or low-income families remained at or near the highest levels since before World War II. Almost one in five American children, or 16.9 percent, lives in a family experiencing poverty. That's 12.1 million children nationwide.
Corporate Welfare continues, two years after Congress reduced welfare for individuals and families. It continues to expand, penetrating every corner of the American economy. It has turned politicians into bribery specialists, and smart business people into con artists. And most surprising of all, it has rarely created any new jobs.
