Throughbreds vs. Quarter Horses
Although you can race just about everything, including camels and goats, horse racing is one of the fastest animal races around. And while there are minor circuits such as Paint racing and Appaloosa racing, the two main contenders are Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Both designed for the individual physics of the sport they were bred for.
The famous Thoroughbred...the picture of elegance...all long legs and smooth sleek body. It typifies what we would associate for a horse race. Capable of going at top speeds for over a mile, this powerful animal has centuries of careful breeding to bring out the speed.
Thoroughbreds are capable of excelling at a wide variety of distances, usually ranging from six furlongs to one and a quarter miles.
The Thoroughbred
Streamlined body tones down air resistance, which acts like friction on a sliding object, slowing the horse down.
Wide chest for larger lung capacity. Larger number of air molecules in the lungs=larger volume for lungs.
Smaller barrel to eliminate unnecessary weight.

The Quarter Horse, the proud possesor of short legs, a bulky body, and short stamina. It would seem that it would go against everything we learned if we were to know that it is the fastest breed in the world, faster, in fact, than the Throughbred.
The quarter mile sprint for which this breed was named is perfect for this odd body.
The Quarter Horse
Thick, short legs able to survive the big impulse between the legs and the track
Streamlined head, recieved from the Thoroughbred in breeding, tones down air resistance.
Thick "sprinter's" body, designed for short bursts of speed
