Coming from a theatre background I used to think that the ultimate high was to perform in front of an appreciative crowd. But as any performer knows that moment is fleeting and audiences are as variable the weather. The first time I put hammer to silver and raised a beautiful chalice I knew I had found a high even sweeter than my beloved stage and even better, this time I had tangible reminder of that rush. There is something so powerful and satisfying in wielding torch and hammer to control and shape metal into the forms that I see dancing in my mind behind my closed lids.
I work largely in a juxtapostion of styles. I bring together pieces of nature or flowing organic shapes along with textures, shapes, colours, and fasteners that could only have manifest in a technologically enhanced society. And sometimes I'll make something just for the heck of it . . . tell me what's the point of Art if you can't have a good time doing it? |
