In 1883 there was a small town of Silverton with 250 people living in it but with in a year there were 3000 people living in Silverton.
In 1886 there was mass exit to the newly discovered silver fields 24km away. In Silverton's hey day it was a thriving, bustling township with 6 churches, 4 banks, 3 breweries, 10 pubs, a hospital and a
primary school, the Silverton Stock Exchange, the silver age newspaper, a court house, gaol and a host of shops. Today Silverton is a ghost town with many of the buildings that made Silverton are no more.
