A Look At Broken Hill

Broken Hill Mines:

The first mine pegged in the area was at Thackaringa in 1878 but in the next 7 years nearly 300 claims were pegged over an area of  5000 square Kilometers. In September 1883, Charles Rasp, David James and James Poole rode from the dam-sinkers camp to Broken Hill and pegged a 40 acres area on Broken Hill (Block 12). At the time Block 12 was pegged  Silverton was a booming mining town and most people thought the Broken Hill would amount to nothing so people of Silverton gave Broken Hill the name of The Hill Of Mullock or meaning a rock with no ore in it but in 5  years Silverton had vanished off the map with most of the people moving to Broken Hill. Now 119 years later Broken Hill is stile mining just showing how much ore was in the Broken Hill ore but in 2006 the last reaming  mine will close ending mining on the greatest ever Lead, Silver and Zinc ore body in the world.
