Prologue
*Winter 1995*

"Cassie, can you go get us some napkins?" Tracy Connor asked her friend, Cassandra Hart when she got back to the table they were sitting at during lunch.

"What, are your legs broken or something, Trace?" Their other friend, Nick Carter, asked her.

Tracey rolled her eyes and hit Nick playfully on the arm. "She doesn't mind...Do you Cass?" She asked.

Cassandra shrugged. "I guess-" She began, putting her tray down.

"No," Nick interrupted her, "Cassie, sit down. Tracey, get your own damn napkins."

"Really Nick, I don't mind," Cassandra said, "I'll be right back."

Ncik watched Cassandra walk away. He turned his head over to Tracey to say something and saw her putting her chewed up gum in Cassandra's hamburger. The others at the table were laughing and handing over other things for her to put in it. Nick didn't find it quite as amusing.

"Tracey, what the fuck are you doing?" He hissed.

"Chill out, Nick. I'm just adding a little more flavor to Cassie's lunch." She explained with an evil smile as she put the top back onto the burger.

Nick rolled his eyes and picked up the newly topped hamburger. He stood up to throw it away just as Cassandra walked back to the table, a pile of napkins in hand. He looked at him and asked, "Nick, what are you doing?"

"Nothing...nothing. Cassie, come with me." He took Cassandra by the arm and began to pull her away from the table.

Cassandra pulled her arm away from him and put the napkins down on the table in front of Tracy. "What's Nick's damage?" She asked her.

Tracy shrugged and smiled sweetly at her friend. "I have no idea. It must be in the water..." She told her.

Cassandra then turned to Nick. "Really, though. What is your problem?" She questioned him, "And why the hell do you have my food? Damn, Nick. You can afford your own, can't you?"

Everyone at the table laughed, but Nick knew that they weren't just laughing at him. They were laughing at Cassandra because she was so ignorant sometimes.

"Cassie, seriously, come with me." Nick told her.

Cassandra rolled her eyes and turned to Tracy. "I'll be right back," She told her, "Just let me go find out what Nick's deal is."

Cassandra followed Nick to the other end of the lunchroom. He deposited the hamburger box into the trashcan on the way there. "Nick, are you having an episode?" I asked him.

"Cass, how can you be friends with that...that bitch?" Nick asked her.

"Who? Tracy? Tracy's
not a bitch," Cassandra insisted, "She's my best friend!"

"You need to learn how to make better friends. Tracy is evil." Nick told her.

"What makes you say that?" Cassandra asked him, putting her hands on her hips and looking into his eyes, "Hmm?"

"Just the way she acts towards you. All the time. She pushes you around as if you were her slave!" Nick exclaimed.

"She does not...I do things for her, she does things for me. It's a win-win sort of thing."

"You know what she did while you were off getting her precious napkins?" Nick asked, "She took you food, your hamburger, and stuck her gum in it."

"Why would she do that?" Cassandra asked him suspiciously,

"Because she's mean!" Nick told her, throwing his arms into the air.

"She was just joking around." Cassandra insisted.

"No she wasn't...I don't know what her problem is, but she needs to learn how to be someones friend." Nick said angrily. Not so much angry at Cassandra, but at Tracy.

"Look, Trace is my best friend. She would never do anything like that just to hurt or embarass me." Then, more to herself than to Nick she added, "Friends always joke around with each other..."
