    Marsh Harboour, Bahamas Investigators waded through smouldering Bahamian swampland yesterday, carting off sand-coveredluggage and hunting for clues to the plane crash that killed youg R&B star Aaliyah and eight others.
      The Cessna carrying the singer-actress and her party plummeted to earth in a perfect wheather Saturday afternoon soon after takeoff for Florida.
       Police Superintendent Basil Rahming said one of the Cessna's engines "apparently failed."
       Aaliyah who at the age of 22 already had two Grammy nominations, a platnum album and several acting credits under her belt, was killed instantly. Five others on board also dies at the scene, Three more dies later of injuries, Rahming said.
     A new york native and resident of Detroit,Aalyah had deep roots in R&B community.
"She was like one of my daughters, she was one of the sweetest girls in the world," said Grammy-winning producer, arranger and coposer Quicy Jones. "She vacationed with me and my family together in Fiji. I loved her and respected herand i am aboslutely
devastaed.
     Aaliyah and her party had come to the Bahamas to shoot a music video.The slilnky soul star took home two mtv music video Awards last september.
       The plane, bound for opajocka,Fla., went dwon on Abaco Island, roughly 60 meters from the end of the runway at marsh harbour.
      The cessna's nose section came to rest about 18 meters from
the battered fuselage.
      Abaco Island Chief councillor Sillbert Mills, was at the airport 160 kilometers north of naddau when the plane took off. He helped rescue the injured. "I pulled one from the aircraft, and he was csreaming. He said he was in a lot of pain."
Rahming said the others killed lace, 49and Anthony Dodd,37, both of LA'S :Virgin Records representative Douglas Kratz,28,makeup artist Eric Foreman,29,and Gian smith,29 all of hollywood;and the Christopher Maldonado;32,of new Jersey.The pilot, L. Maradel,also died.
      Relying on handwritten cards filled out befor the flight, police
were unsure about spelling of victim's name and lacking some hometown, Assistant Superintendent Leland Russell said.
The bodies-some burned-were being taken to Princess Margaet Hospital's morgue in nassau for identificatal by relatives.
    Virgin Records offered to pay for relatives to come, a U.S embassy spokesperson said. U.S. national transportation safety Board and federal Avministration are to join the probe today.
