Why is the child on the street?

  • To raise money to buy food and clothes. 

  • He started begging when his father died in 1995. 

  • He doesn't know the whereabouts of his mother. 

  • His parents divorced in 1992 and his father got remarried.  When his father died, his stepmother got hold of all the accounts.  She was only paying for her children and Lottie was left out. Most of Lottie's  relatives who where good friends to the family have since passed away.  He has no one to lean on apart from a young cousin who is 18 years old and who is working as a carpenter.

  • He tried to find a job, but that failed because he isn't qualified.


Why has he stopped school?

  • He stopped school at Kansenshi Basic School in Grade 7 when his father died in 1995.


Problems faced in the streets.

  • He has many problems as he has no friends.

  • He wants to finish education and start working.

Why is the child on the street?

  • There was no food at home, due to his father's unemployment. 

  • He was sourcing money for the whole family.

  • He used to sleep in town when he had nothing to take home.


Why has he stopped school?

  • He stopped school in 2000 at Kalewa Basic School when he was in Grade 3. 

  • His father couldn't pay for his school fees since he was out of employment.


Problems faced in the street.

  • His friends would influence him to go to other towns to look for 'green pastures'.

  • He was forced to steal, smoke, drink and when refusing he would be beaten.

  • Older boys would often ask for every Kwacha he was given.  At times they would search him when he was sleeping.


What does he want to do and be?

  • He wants to learn.
