Helping streetchildren through support and education

PO Box 240073, Vitanda Street, Ndola, Zambia

This is the web-site for One Family Learning Centre, in Ndola Zambia. You can use this site to find out more about our Centre and also about life of street-children and orphans in Ndola.

Background

One result of the deteriorating economic situation and the effect of HIV/AIDS pandemic in Zambia is the increasing number of street children in the major cities and towns. Unemployment rates and HIV prevalence in the country means that most children are the victims of both poverty and AIDS.

One Family is helping the most vulnerable children who have found themselves on the streets of Ndola, Zambias second largest city, due to family and social problems.

The children at our centre arrived on the streets for various reasons. Some have lost both parents. Some were staying with relatives who would not, or could not provide for them. Some have run away from abusive homes.

One Family Learning Centre

One Family was formed in July 2001 by Zambian and expatriate volunteers. We are registered as a Society of Zambia and with the Community Schools Secretariat at the Ministry of Education.

We currently provide support and education to around 30 of Ndolas street kids. Our activities are supported through the kindness of our well-wishers, organisations and individuals in Zambia and abroad.

One Familys Activities

  • Educating street children in essential life skills.
  • Giving street children a nutritious meal each day.
  • Providing washing facilities, basic medical care and health education.
  • Offering counseling and support.
  • Finding places for street children in mainstream schools and on vocational courses.
  • Reintegrating street children with their families.
  • Raising awareness in the community about street children and their issues.
