| Tribute to Herb Brooks and the Miracle on Ice With V-Day behind us and St. Patty's Day ahead, CHAD celebrates miracles and mourns the dead. The miracle? US downing the Soviets in a 4-3 defeat. The death, their coach from Saint Paul, leader of the fleet. The Soviets and the US were natural foes. It started off the ice where tensions really rose. Embroiled in the Cold War, there was little love lost. A group of amateurs, ready to win at any cost. The US entered the game with four wins and a tie. The Soviets had outscored their opponents 41-5. It was a back and forth battle, the Soviets took the early lead. The US always countered with teamwork and speed. Mike Eruzione broke the final tie when his slap shot went in. Could they hold on for ten minutes and preserve this win? This gritty group of amateurs gave it their all and nothing less. Until Al Michaels uttered, "Do you believe in Miracles, Yes!" The leader of this miracle, Herb Brooks, was from Saint Paul. When it comes to hockey this guy did it all. So in August of 03 when a one car crash claimed his life. The news of his death tore through the city like a knife. Clearly Herb Brooks legacy has left a mark. A bronze statue of his likeness faces out over Rice Park. CHAD this Friday remembers the miracle and the man. Who showed everyday American's to believe "You Can!" |
