Hi. My name is D, aka Peachy D because I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia (the peach state). Now I live in Wisconsin, Lake Michigan.
I collect teapots, advertising tins, carved walking sticks, quilts, stamps with 2 dates on them and items with heart or birdhouse motifs. My favorite colors are teal green, teal blue, aqua, turquoise, sapphire blue, ocean blue, cobalt blue, amethyst and black. |

My Grandmother taught me how to knit & crochet when I was 8 (THANK YOU Gramma!) Though she was legally blind, she crocheted the most gorgeous afghans in striking color combinations -- how did she do that?! I wish she could see what I've done with the skills she taught me...
Gramma taught me to knit totally different from anything I've ever seen anybody else do. Instead of running the yarn through my right hand and yarning over with my right index finger, I run the yarn through my left hand and yarn over with the tip of the right needle. When you knit this way, it's as fast (or faster) than crocheting. Sometimes I knit so fast that the yarn burns as it's running through the fingers of my left hand.
This is a hobby/craft well worth spreading around, so I teach it to the women and girls at a residential treatment center for individuals recovering from alcohol, drug and domestic abuse. It's a comfortable way for them to begin socializing again and when they realilze that they can actually create something, it's a great self esteem booster. You can find some of the items they've made on my Flying Fingers Needleworx Auction Site (click on the link at right).
I also knit & crochet scarves, hats, mittens & afghans for homeless shelters. They really need all the warm winter items they can get. If you're a knitter or crocheter, it's so easy to make scarves & afghans out of your gauge test swatches. Please consider doing this and donating the finished items to homeless shelters in your city. If you'd like to get involved in crafting items for other charities, please check out some of my favorite links at the right side of this page.
Items I enjoy knitting & crocheting for friends, family and profit include afghans that look like quilts, fashionable sweaters, vests, and fancy, frilly baby dresses.
I highly recommend these wonderful pattern magazines and books: Crochet Fantasy, Decorative Crochet, Magic Crochet, Afghans & Crochet Classics, Annette Lep's Crocheting Patchwork Patterns, Ann Orr's Afghans to Crochet and Knit, Big Book of Favorite Crochet Patterns, The Filet Crochet Book, Glorious Crocheted Sweaters, Herrschner's Blue Ribbon Afghans, In Love With Crochet, Mosaic Magic: Afghans Made Easy, Vanna's Afghans A-Z, Vanna's Favorite Gift Afghans, Vanessa Ann's Plain & Fancy Crochet. You can find these, and many others, online at Barnes & Noble. Just type in the word "crochet" in the link below to see the great pattern books that are available. |
