Claudio Tonna
Maltese singer,
actor and presenter
Claudio Tonna son of John and
Cettina was born on the 24th January 1966 in the village of Zurrieq, Malta; attended
from primary at The Zurrieq boys school and started secondary at The Mount
Carmel College, St Venera and continued at St Joseph secondary school,
Corradino. In 1983 he joined the E.S.T.S apprenticeship sceme in the Building
trades and was appointed as a building tradesman II in 1987. To day Claudio is
attending a Middle Management coarse at The University of Malta and also
studying a diploma coarse in Interior Design with Rhodec International
U.K.Claudio married Mariella Pace on the 22nd December 1991 and had a son named
Daniel on the 14th October 1993.
Claudio started showing
interest in Music when he was 11 years of age by sharing an old guitar with his
elder and only brother Mark who at present is one of the most popular singers
in Malta, until Mark formed a 4 piece band and Claudio joined as a bass
guitarist. The band was called Young and it consisted of Mark (lead guitar
& vocals), Sunny (rhythm guitar), Tommy (drums) and Claudio (bass guitar
& vocals). The band lasted 4 years
Until Mark joined another
couple of bands The New Discovery and later The Blue Jeans. It was very hard
for the rest of the band (Young) to find a replacement for Mark and so this was
the end of Young.
In 1984 Claudio joined another
band, this time it was a new wave band called Structure. Structure had been
togheter for two years before Claudio joined them, with Giorgina as the singer
that was later replaced by Tony Sant St john after she decided to have a
carrier as a soloist does. Claudio came after Tony and this time he was the
main singer for Structure. The band consisted of Pierre Caruana (keyboards),
Joe Farrugia (Drums), Joe Fenech (Bass) and Mike Boukowski (lead guitar). Mike
Boukowski was a very keen guitarist but was later replaced by David Cassar
Rugiani after he decided to settle in the U.K. The band used to rehearse in
Tigne (A.S.T) where many great Maltese bands used to meet, as this was the
music city until somebody decided to change it into a water treatment plant and
also to burn all the studios including Structure's studio. In 1987 Structure
was chosen by composer Ray Agius and author Alfred C. Sant to participate in
the International Maltese song festival with their song Windsurfer. Structure's
first appearance on The Maltese National Television was in 1985 in the most
popular youth T.V program of those times Arzella produced and presented by Ray
Azzopardi.
Acting
Claudio Tonna took part in 7
musicals and 2 plays and in present he also took part in two separate
teleserials one for Super 1 TV, (Tlieta kontra tlieta) and the other for P.B.S
( Ipokriti).
