Coffee Is Life
by Dan Asmus
eyes not half open I mess with the damn'd grinder brew, coffeepot, brew
gotta have a cup I need it in the morning O! coffee is life!
Undoubtedly, if you are a caf-"fiend" like me, you know whereof I speak.
But have your coffee-making implements (or other kitchen appliances) begun supporting other life forms?
I find it therapeutic to support and encourage such collaborative efforts, and remain on the lookout for interesting vehicles to employ in this four-dimensional art form.
Some of these works are on sale, and I hope to feature screen images of them here, along with some pleasing photos that I've snapped over the years. Here's a link to some experimentation. In 1998 I had eight photo images up at the Lotus in Saint Paul--did you see them? One is of a lotus flower at the Xi Jiao guesthouse in Shanghai, and another features a bee hovering near a hibiscus flower on the "big island" of Hawaii. One more favorite is the image of a young schoolgirl running through a hedge-row maze at Hampton Court Palace in England.

A most exciting installation for me was in 2001, as part of the show, "SPACE AVAILABLE" at the Nash Gallery in Minneapolis. I installed a combination four-dimensional sculpture titled "#36 of series: Coffee Is Life, 1994-present". It was described as "mixed biomedia and garage sale items" and was given what I feel was the optimum spot in the gallery. I'll have to scan some photos in order to get them on here...that may take a while.
