So....what is a TARDIS?
TARDIS
stands for:
Time And Relative Dimensions In Space
It is a spaceship/time machine capable of travelling anywhere within time and space. This one, is an outmoded model, (type 40) and a malfunctioning one as well. Despite the Dr's constant fiddling and repairing, it seems to be
It is supposed to be capable of changing its appearance to fit into whatever surroundings it finds itself in, but this one seems to be stuck.  During a visit to earth in the 1960's it disguised itself as a blue British Police call box.  Now...it seems to be unable  to be anything else.
This can of course,
                 be somewhat awkward at times...
Another fabulous peculiarity about the TARDIS is  that it's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.
This is attributed to it being "dimensionally transcendental", which was explained to Leela by the Fourth Doctor using the analogy of how a larger cube can appear to be able to fit inside a smaller one if
Apart from the obvious feature of the console room, containing the controll console, the TARDIS interior also includes an art gallery containing some of history's great works (Rescued by the Doctor from disasters which history states destroyed them), bedrooms, a bathroom with a
swimming pool, a
medical bay, several
brick-walled storage
areas, a vast library, a garden, "the cloisters," yes...just like it sounds, laboratories, and a wardrobe room
containing clothes from
all eras of humanity
rather erratic.  It often goes "off course"... just a bit.....and its chameleon abilities have stopped functioning properly.
and out of place...
the larger cube is further away, yet immediately accessible at the same time.
SO THERE YOU HAVE IT!

The TARDIS is a vehicle, a workspace, a recreational facility, and home to the Doctor.  In short, everything he needs can be found in it.
