The Courtship Letters
of
Lewis Levi Mc Comb & Laura Belle Starnes

Lewis Levi Mc Comb & Laura Belle Starnes
began courting about mid to late 1883 - September 1886.
Only 10 letters remain of this courtship: 1885 - 1886.
The original letters are in the possession of granddaughter Eva Bell Mc Comb Hensley.

At the time of their courtship, Lewis Levi Mc Comb was working for his cousin: Dr. Jacob Woodson Mc Comb,
who had a ranch in Jacksborro, Jack Co. Texas.
He would travel into the neighboring counties of Grayson, Cooke & Montague on ranch business for his cousin.
Before moving to Jack Co., Dr. Mc Comb owned land in Cooke Co. Texas in 1883

In 1884 Laura Belle Starnes family was living in Sunset, Montague Co. Texas.
In one of the last letters written Lewis Levi Mc Comb mentions about a meeting in Cooke Co. Texas.
Before moving to Montague Co., Laura Belle's family lived in Cooke Co. Texas.
I have concluded from this bit of information and the fact that both lived in Cooke Co. Texas at the same time, that this is where they met & began courting.

During part of their courtship,
Laura Belle Starnes was living in Baldwin, Pickens Co. Indian Territory.
It also appears that her older brother James Peter "Pete" Starnes was also living there.
They may have been working for a ranch, though Laura Belle never said why she was there.
The town of Baldwin (now called Ryan) was near the Chisom Trail where cattle were heading for market.

Below is listed a link to each letter.
They are listed by date & to whom written.

I have copied these letters exactly as they were written.
I have only added comma's & period's to make them easier to read.
