I have found no trace of the surname "LEVEIRA"
on any records in the AZORES ISLANDS.

in the U.S. besides this family.

was put on a whaleing ship
at the age of 9 as a cabin boy.

ship was docked in:

he jumped ship.
Family stories passed down say:
Joseph was very large for his age.
And at the age of 12
this may have been
when he worked his way West.
If there is a thread of truth
to this story
he would have traveled on board ship around
Cape Horn and landed in SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
