Prairie House Project begins!

I "think" we have decided on a house plan. This is a temporary house for us, or perhaps the small beginning of a bigger "eventual" house. I have been looking at the Wilderness Cabins from Ontario, BC for some time. What attracts me to this company is that I have the choice to either build my house from scatch with their plan, or order the entire house in a package...which comes with everything I would need to bring it to "lock down".

Lock-down is where you have the foundation, roof, walls, windows and doors. It IS a house, although is not a fully finished house. Some of the Wilderness Cabins can be brought to lock-down in a few days with the full cabin purchase. This is very appealing to me. I have children and I can't live in a tent or with friends for long, and I can't build a house while living in the city. This house will be built in the hills...and while many house raisings have happened recently in this community, I can't expect for friends and family to help me bring my house to lock-down fully. We will have to pay people to help.

So currently I am trying to decide if we should buy the plans, or the kit. The time of year that we plan to move is also important. I want to have this house ready before the winter of 2004 hits.

October 3, 2003:

A friend has offered to give me her claw footed bathtub when she gets her new tub. She is going for the modern long tub and I am so happy that she is. I have wanted a claw foot tub for ever! My hope is that slowly along the way, we will find things we need for this house, so that at move in time, we are not faced with having to buy lots of new things.

Current Want List:

Hard wood flooring for approximately 1000 sq ft of flooring
Stove top and half oven below
Wood stove
Older pedestal sink for bathroom
Toilet from a remoldeling site
Mexican tile for kitchen and bathroom
Drawer style dishwasher (hey, I will be working!)
Compact Washer/Dryer

The theme to this house will definately be "space saving".

February 8th, 2004

We are still looking for a peice of land to buy. The peice that I like is too overpriced. So we will just keep our eyes open for other properties.

May 2004

Well, so far we are still hoping to buy some property in an unnamed location. I won't disclose that, even tho it is far away from the city.

The kids are getting excited about having a new house. Once I finish my LMT program and have my license, we will be ready to buy property and build. So much is hanging on this LMT program. I should be finished in two more months. More news if and when I have it.
