| Our son places his hands together and says "Om, Shanti, Shanti, Shanti, Om" when we worship god. We are a Hindu family. We live in a predominately Christian community, and as a homeschooling family, we find that most homeschoolers are Christian..homeschooling because they want to impart their religious views to their children. We aren't homeschooling because we are Hindu's, but our faith is important in this education journey. Some people automatically assume that we are Christians because we homeschool. We hope to change that notion, and also share in this journey with other Hindu families. We pray to the goddess Saraswati for her blessings each day, that our children will learn what is needed of them, and that we are able to offer all the food for thought that is necessary for our children to learn. More than teaching our children about our faith, we want to give them the ability to become more spiritual. With adults working in stressful jobs and then returning to their homes, they must learn how to leave the work and stress outside of their home. We will teach our children to do this through worship, meditation, yoga and visits to the temple. Also, we will try to share the Hindu culture with our children, of respecting elders, being gentle with all humans and animals, and being careful not to hurt the feelings of others. As our children become interested, we will take them for dance lessons, to the Hindu youth group and for language lessons. Our children will become more involved with the temple as they grow older so that they can learn more from other's in our community, and not just from us. By doing these things, we think that they will be more well rounded, and more accepting of others. Jyotsna |
