What Are you Doing?

Type of Lesson:

            Warm-up

Age Group:

            9-12 grade

Time Period:

            10 minutes

Materials Needed:

            none

Objectives:

The students will think and react quickly to given circumstances.

National Goals:

#2        -           The student will act by interacting in improvisation and assuming roles.

Procedure:

Improvisor 1 begins an action (eg: jumping rope).  Improvisor 2 says, “What are you doing?”  Imp 1 says something OTHER than jumping rope (eg: “Building a bird house.”)  Imp 2 begins building a bird house, Imp 1 asks Imp 2, “What are you doing?”  Etc, etc.  Response speed is a must, as is making the action as different from the response as possible.  Groups of two should work together to build speed.  Advanced classes can work in a line or a circle and see how fast activities can be shared around the room.

Evaluation Method

Students will be evaluated on shift speed, distinct characteristics of motion, and ability to continue creating new activities to participate.
