“In
medieval times such as King Athur and Robin hood, their wee people called
Gatekeepers. Robin hood’s friend,
Little John, became his Gatekeeper. In
those days it was a Gatekeeper’s job to guard the gates of the castle. Since castles were so big, they often needed
extra men to help defend the walls.
There were a lot of knights on quests in those days who often needed places
to stay and food to eat. These men
would come to the gate and ask for food and shelter. In return for these things
they would help defend the castle for a night.
The Gatekeeper would tests these knights by challenging them. They didn’t want to injure the knights or
the wouldn’t be able to defend the castle, so the Lords came up with a
non-violent test. The Gatekeeper’s
weapon was a staff or a large stick cut from a hardwood tree. He would challenge the knights by presenting
them the staff and stating... This is not a stick what is it. It was the Knight’s job to figure out as
many things that it could be in a set
amount of time. This tested their
intelligence. Since they would have to
be able to fight also part of the challenge consisted of them demonstrating how
each weapon or item was used. To play
the challenge the person who has an idea of what this is can call freeze. They come up and tell us what it is, then
demonstrate how you use that item. The
next person who has an idea can call freeze after the previous person is done
acting out the use of the object. Your
goal is to come up with as many items as possible in ____amount of time. Today I am the Gatekeeper. You are all Knights come to defend this
castle. This is not a stick what is
it.”
