OFFICIAL FALLOUT PATCHES

If you have the initial release of Fallout (v.1.0), then you should get the Fallout v.1.1 patch. The patch fixes many bugs, improves stability, and increases the game’s overall performance. It is about a megabyte in size for Macintosh, while for Win32 and DOS platforms the sizes are 556 and 644 kilobytes, respectively. A GeoCities mirror has been added for the Win32 patch because of wait lines for both FilePlanet and Interplay servers.

Version 1.2 (the European release) features the same bugfixes as patch v.1.1 but also removes children from the game.

USEFUL FILES

Some files are needed for Fallout (2) to run. They include:

-          Microsoft DirectX: The latest version can be found at Microsoft’s DirectX website here. It is required for the Win32 version of Fallout. The website is located at www.microsoft.com/directx. Fallout requires DirectX 3.0a to run. Computers running under Windows NT 4.0 Service Release 3 (and later incarnations of the NT kernel) as well as Windows 98 (and later incarnations of the Win95 kernel) have DirectX embedded within the kernel. Windows 95 DOES NOT have DirectX instructions and it needs to be installed.

-          DOS/4GW: This is the extended-mode binary that is needed for the DOS version of Fallout to run.

-          CWSDPMI: Yet another extended-mode binary for DOS, this is needed for the DOS version of the Fallout character editor.

-          Win-Zip by Niko-Mak: This is an excellent archiving utility that is needed to unzip practically all of the files on this website! You can download Win-Zip at www.winzip.com.

-          StuffIt Expander by Aladdin Systems: Similar to Win-Zip (except that this utility is for the Macintosh), this utility can extract compressed files with the .hqx extension. You can grab it at www.aladdinsys.com.

HACKED CHARACTERS

There are two hacked characters available for download. Here is the lowdown on both of them:

Vanessa, a 21-year old female, and Robert, a 26-year old male, are “outworld” initiates of the Brotherhood of Steel (BOS). Their status indicates that they operate covertly and are not doing anything “official” for the BOS, nor are they “actual members” of the BOS. Their mission is to destroy the mutant threat plaguing California but, as a cover for their actual quest, they are searching for a replacement water chip for Vault 13.

Vanessa is extremely capable in combat, but she is best suited for affairs which call for diplomacy. Robert, on the other hand, has better training in the ways of war, but has more than adequate knowledge where nonviolent matters are concerned.

As far as equipment is concerned, both Vanessa and Robert have more than enough weaponry to deal with any threat, real or imaginary. Both have specialized suits of T-51b Powered Armor (a variant which removes the Brotherhood insignia and features a tougher exterior “skin”) as well as a Rocket Launcher, a semiautomatic Combat Shotgun, a Sniper Rifle, a sledgehammer engineered by the BOS, as well as lots of miscellaneous paraphernalia that can aid them whenever needed (lock picks, healing chemicals, etc.) Vanessa and Robert have also undergone medical operations that include the fitting of dermal armor and the strengthening the body to better cope with radiation and chemicals.

NOTE: Extract the zipped files into the directory (root Fallout directory)/data/savegame/slot0x. Both of the characters start the game outside of the Brotherhood of Steel base and have 148 days to retrieve the water chip (as opposed to 150). And yes, you do not have to search or find the water chip. Destroying the mutant threat will enable you to beat the game.

FALLOUT DEMO

An early build of the Fallout demo is available for both Win32 and the Macintosh. You play as Max Stone in a town called Scrapheap (reminiscent of Junktown). There are two gangs, the Fools and the Crypts, who are trying to gain control of Scrapheap. Help the gangs by joining one and killing the other. There is also an extremely small subquest.

-          Win32 Demo, zipped file (19.6 megabytes)

-          Macintosh Demo, binhexed file (28.8 megabytes)

FALLOUT CHARACTER EDITOR (i386 binaries)

Khor Chin Heong has written an excellent Fallout character editor, which essentially is a trainer that lets you edit virtually every single aspect of your character’s statistics via a saved game. This utility should be used under your own risk, as it can invalidate your saved game files! (Note that this is unsupported software, so use at your own risk.) Khor’s Fallout Character Editor website is located here.
