Urban sprawl can be defined as wide spread, low-density development (www.greatlakes.net). Most of this is caused from new housing developments, strip malls, and other small businesses taking up shop in undderdeveloped land area (www.greatlakes.net). This is considered a problem because we are losing many acres of farmable land due to urbanization (www.greatlakes.net). Eventually some cities will become abondoned, taking up precious land area that could be utilized differently (www.greatlakes.net). The cons to this problem is that due to money from the government, the "American Dream", increased car manufactoring and economic growth, our country is slowly but surely losing its' countryside (www.greatlakes.net). On the flipside, we are benefiting from this because we are able to discover new treatments and things due to our new facilites. The affects of this is that it is completely destroying many ecological systems and their natural habitats (www.greatlakes.net). When this happens, this forces animals to find a new place to live or they die off altogether. Many governments are implementing rules such as literally drawing circles around the towns and not allowing anyone to build beyond that line forcing communities to build up rather than out (www.greatlakes.net). I believe that by fallowing these rules and growing up instead of out it will further the life expectancy of many animals. |
