Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect
Global warming is the average increase in the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in the past decades. This is one of the natural processes on our planet and it is essential to life on Earth. It is the result of heat absorption of certain gases in our atmosphere (called 'greenhouse gases' because they effectivly trap heat in the lower atmosphere) and re-radiation downward of some of that heat. This is mainly considered a problem because if we did not have the Greenhouse Effect, our planet would be about zero degrees F instead of the present 57 degrees F. The problem isn't so much that we have a greenhouse effect, it's that the people around the world are enhancing the problem.

Many people would argue that the greenhouse effect is a good thing while a vast majority of people would argue that the greenhouse effect is hurting our planet. There are few cons to the world growing hotter every year. For example, many of the people living in cold climates within the next couple of million years, they will no longer be living in a cold area, but a warm one instead. Honestly, I can almost gaurentee that almost everyone would like the climate and seasons to grow a little warmer, but not completely change the atmosphere. Another pro to global warming is the fact that it is causing our water cycle to speed up the process, preducing more and more precipitation. There's nothing wrong with having a little more rain and water, right? On the flipside, global warming is rapidly melting all of the polar ice caps, producing mass flooding and it is destroying homes and certain land areas. According to scientists, within the next couple of billion years, they say our whole planet could be potentially covered with water due to global warming. Another con to global warming is the rise in sea level which once again, will eventually cause flooding. What do you think we should do?

The people around the world are not the only people attempting to slow the process down of global warming, but the national and local governments are putting in their share of hard work also. Many states are creating programs and stratagies that are cost-effectivly reducing global warming and improving air quality. For example, each state creates a State Action Plan according to their state which ultimately creates a voluntary greenhouse gas emission reduction goal. Without theses plans, I doubt that anything would be done to prevent or slow down the process of global warming. Consumers can help prevent global warming by looking for ENERGY STAR labled products for your home, change 5 lightbublbs within your house to ENERGY STAR lightbulbs, and reduce, re-use and recycle.

Global warming does one thing to our environment and it's very simple: it makes the world warmer. When the world gets warmer, certain plants are not capable of living under those conditions and they will ultimately die. If there are animals living off of those plants, they will die just prolonging the vicious cycle. Global warming changes all of our planets habits that everything and everyone have become accustomed to.

My solution to this problem is follow the steps instated by your state. Buy energy effective lightbulbs and turn off lights within your house that aren't being used. You  could even go to the lengths of buying a Hybrid car so that your regular doesn't emit dangerous gases into our atmosphere. It's your choice.

Considering this is the first time that I have really looked into the effects of global warming, I think it's safe to say that I believe that gloabl warming is clearly something that shouldn't be taken lightly. Eventually our Earth may become too hot to live on so what will that do to our population along with the animal kingdom? I know I will certainly do whatever I can to prevent global warming.
