| Did you know that 90% of all large fishes have dissapeared from the world's ocean's in the past half century destroying industrial fishing (globalissues.org)? If this continues to happen, before we know it, there will be a very large imbalance in marine ecology (globalissues.org). Loss of biodiversity is when certain species are taken out of their natural habitat causing imbalances in the ecosystem and destroying food chains and food webs. This is considered a problem because without certain animals, other spcies will die off, resulting in more animals dying off. It's all one vicious cycle and human beings are doing nothing to slow the process down, in fact, humans are speeding the process along. According to a recent study, experts say that over one million species will be lost in the coming 50 years (globalissues.org). There are, however, a few pros to this evergrowing concern in our ecosystem. Scientists say that many species, when taken out of their natural habitat, will idependently come up with the same adaptaion to a particular environment called "parallelism". This will help enforce that some species have the ability to survive. But on the flipside to this, parallelism is when scientists once considered many species are now only being considered one (globalissues.org). This under-represents biodiversity and some species would not be getting the protection needed because they are not considered another species due to evolutionary changes (globalissues.org) Thankfully, the government is taken action against this by establishing protected areas that are not allowed to be touched by hunters (greenfacts.org). Another way the government is slowing down loss of biodiversity is informing the public about the problem. This has proven to be one of the most effective ways of perserving wildlife just by educating the public (greenfacts.org). People around the world can contribute also by not fishing for endangered species, only eat plentiful meat and other resources. Loss of biodiversity is affecting our environment greatly. When certain species are dying off or are being killed off this affects other species that depend on them to live. If their food supply is taken away, they will die off also. If no one is going to stop this, our ecosystem will hardly exist. There are several soutions to this problem, those being that people should not hunt, fish or capture animals that are known to be endangered. People know better than to do that but they are only doing it because of the large sum of money involved. People are ingorant as to the bigger problem behind them killing certain animals. Before I really learned about loss of biodiversity, it never really registered in my mind the affects it has on people and the animal kingdom. From now on, if the time arrises, I will educate people about the information I learned. |
