| Alternative energies should be used far more often than fossil fuels because fossil fuels cost more to poduce and are quickly being used up. Alternative energies are energy sources that will never run out, better for our atmosphere, and cheaper to produce. The pros and cons to the problems of using fossil fuels over alternative energies is simple: we are not accustomed to using solar power as opposed to gasolin power and other such examples. Many people around the world have not been educated about the other ways to produce energy. If they did, I'm sure that would have converted to using alternative evergies sooner. The cons to this frowing problem is that fossil fuels are not re-newable while alternative energies are. Also, it costs a lot more money to produce and manufacture fossil fuels than it is to produce solar power or wind power. The pro to this problem is this:alternative energy will never run out and is most definately re-newable. Here are some examples of alternative energy: Wind Power- It is estimated that if 10% of the world's energy came from wind, it would cut CO2 emissions by one billion tons a year (www.bp.com). There are currently only two wind turbines in the world and sadly they are not located in the U.S but soon enough, with the improving technology and higher awareness to the problem, we will start building wind turbines in the U.S (www.bp.com). Natural Gas- This is one of the cleanest hydrocarbons out there today (www.bp.com). When this is burned to create power, it emits about half as much carbon dioxcide as traditional coal-fired power (www.bp.com). Many believe that natural gas is the "bridge" to lower-carbon economy of the future (www.bp.com). Hydrogen Power- The processing of hydrogen began to take place in 2005 (www.bp.com). By taking a fossil fuel such as coal, and turning it into hydrogen and CO2, it generates about 90% of electricity (www.bp.com). The estimated CO2 emissions from this process would be 90% lower than those generated by the burning of fossil fuels (www.bp.com). The government and the people around the world are trying to contribute to changing the way everyone around the world retains their energy. Indirectly, by rising gas prices, this almost forces people to switch to a solar powered car. The emissions of fossil fuels into our atmosphere is affecting the O-Zone layer and the Greenhouse effect. If people do not stop what they are doing, we could be in serious danger. SImply by switching to wind power instead of gas powered, you can help prevent our atmosphere from more danger. I believe that by learning about this problem, I will do all that I can to not enable this problem to get more out of hand than it already is. |
