| Adaptation (****): From screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, it stars Nicolas Cage as, well, Charlie Kaufman and his fictional cassanova brother Donald. Charlie has trouble adapting a sprawling narrative The Orchid Thief into a movie, so he does the only logical thing possible, he writes himself into his own script. Crazy stuff! This movie does a great job of combining fact with fiction into one very enjoyable and satisfying movie. Note: See Being John Malkovich first to get a few in-jokes that pop up during this movie. Being John Malkovich (****): Gosh, this movie was crazy, funny, disturbing, and psychotic all at once. And I loved it. Craig, a bum puppeteer, discovers a portal into John Malkovich's head (actually played by Malkovich) and experiences a 15 minute journey through Malkovich's eyes. After his co-worker, Maxine, and wife, Lotte, find out...well, just watch for yourself, I don't want to give anything away. The movie may be crazy, but it definitely makes sense. Blade 2 (**1/2): Based on the Blade comic books dealing with a half human, half vampire warrior. Blade must corroborate with his very enemies (Vampires) in order to defeat a more powerful threat that is a danger to both vamps and humans. Aside from the insanely cool action scenes, the plot could've used some improvements (there are some twists that you know are coming, and some you didn't see but don't really make sense when you think about them) Still a good popcorn movie. Eurotrip (***): Scotty's hot girlfriend left him. Scotty scared away his penpal. Scotty made a big mistake. Scotty must travel to Europe with his friend Cooper and the Rosse...oops, I mean his twin friends to find his penpal and right his wrongs. Lots of hooligans, lots of nudidy (the wrong kind)*shudder, and lots of fun. Not your standard teen movie. While most teen movies have a lot of stupid jokes in them, this one manages to stay funny throughout. Fight Club (***): Brad Pitt and Edward Norton star in an intriguing movie about a man who loses everything, and attempts to find some sort of purpose in his life instead of the general apathy of his daily routine. The solution appears in Tyler Durden (Pitt), a man who helps him in this regard, and in a very odd way. Very bloody, very violent, and very good. Mulholland Drive (****): I know I'm not a good critic, because I really, really liked this movie, but I don't really know what happened. And I'm having trouble explaining why. Just go into this movie expecting a dreamy sequence of stories that tie in very loose ways. It all begins after a limo crash on Mulholland Drive, and the sole survivor's (Laura Elena Harring) journey through Hollywood after meeting a perky newcomer Betty (Naomi Watts). David Lynch is known for crazy, distorted movies/shows (Twin Peaks), and this is no exception. Just know this, if you don't like this movie, please don't hate me, because I'm warning you beforehand. If you hate movies that are very difficult to "get," you definitely won't like this one. Pi (***1/2): A mathematician, Max Cohen, tries to uncover the secrets of the stock market and nature itself, and becomes more and more insane in doing so. As his madness progresses, a wall street firm and a kabballah sect both seek this numeric code for different reasons, as the solution may contain more than he ever realized. A very disturbing film shot completely in grainy black and white; great acting, weird story, and a crazy, somewhat distorted ending. Watch it only if you're in a good mood, 'cause you won't be afterwards. Requiem for a Dream (****): This movie is directed by Darren Aronofsky (Pi) and follows the lives of three teenagers and an older lady as their addictions to drugs take over their very lives. It's a very depressing and very dramatic account of what can occur if you have an addiction. NOTE: This movie contains very graphic shots of drug use and sex. I cannot recommend this movie to people who may feel offended by these images. |
