I hear you woman of God. Yes it can be a challenge, but worth taking because of the Master said, "My sheep know my voice of another they will not hear." I love to take the Lord at His word. Jesus said that His sheep know His voice. I will go on to say a born again, blood bought, spirit filled believer is expected to detect His voice, from the enemy's voice, and from our own fleshy desires. How can we then as a church receive the marching order from the CEO of the church, i.e. Christ?
My practice, is to test what I heard with scripture. If what I am told to do does not come in agreement with the written word or if it contradicts the written word, I will stay away. Let's say, what I am seekin the Lord about is not in the Logos as black and white. I will put myself to the test to see how much of it is from "self" talking to me rather, than God.
Another test I use is the times when the Father ask me to do something that does not make sense to the natural mind. I realize, we are part of an upside down kingdom as compared to the way things are done in the world.

Hearing God's voice can be a tricky thing, however Sister Kettly answered the most important part, which is knowing God's voice from what he saids in His words. So, I will comment from another angle.
I think knowing God's voice is becomes even more important when He speaks to you from inside your soul. You have got to know it is Him, and not yourself, or the enemy playing mind games. Have you ever heard the saying "Follow your gut". I think it's the same thing, but we never knew all the time it was God speaking. Something telling you, don't go down that street, but you go there anyway, and end up in an accident, was that you? Please, that was God. You can't figure that out on your own. We are too carnal for that. That was God trying to saving you from getting into an accident. If you listen keenly to your inner spirit, you will know if it is really God. Plus in this walk, you have to try the spirit and see whether it be of God or not. . . .

I can talk about this all day long, because I too struggle at times with understanding God's voice, but through experience I am learning how He speaks to me, which may be different from how He speaks to you. You just have to find out what that is. The more you draw close to God the better you will become at knowing His voice. He can speak to you in His word, audibly, or inside you.
God usually speaks to me inwardly or in visions. One example: After my third child was born, I knew she would be my last. When I was pregnant, I had a vision where God was telling me if I accept my child, all will be well with me, and at that time I was very unhappy about having another baby, because I did not want anymore. I did not have any logical explanation for feeling that was my last child, but after I had her, I knew what the vision meant. I held on to that, and a few days after my daughter's first birthday, God fulfilled what He told me. I have witnesses too. My daughter is six years old, and to this day I have no additon to the family. This comment was long, but I hope it has helped you get a better insight on knowing when God is speaking to you.

I agee. You match up what was told or said to you with the "WORD" GOd does not make mistakes. If His Word doesn't say it, then ignore it.
Also, we do not give enough authority to the Holy Spirit that dwells in us. The WOrd says, that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. If we are lead by the Spirit, then that is also a way to know for sure that we know His voice.
The Spirit always bears witness. Then, we can always ask him. Put your fleece out there. The Old prophet of God did it.
