I left for my first trip away from home at the age of 17, to spend a week in Monteray, Mexico on a church mission trip with two other people: a 70 year old senior couple. Of course I came home wanting to major in Spanish and move to Mexico. 2 years later I left 'home' for the first time. Unable to afford to remain in college, I took my sister's invitation to 'come to California' as a permanent invitation to come 'LIVE' in California. I'm not sure when she figured out I was arriving to stay.
Many state-side moves followed over the next 6 years. I never stayed long in one place. I followed my heart mostly, found it easy to secure employment in new places, was not tied down, and therefore could move at will. My homes included California, South Dakota, Boston, and Maine. Each time I moved, I did so with anticipation and excitement. I loved learning about new places, cultures, accents, and geographical landmarks and history of the areas I went. I naturally fell into the local groove, picking up the accents and lingo, learning to drive like the locals, and generally immersing myself in my surroundings. This natural tendancy I consider a great gift, for I love all the places I have lived. They are each home to me.
My family, most never having left our home state, considered me a great adventurer, traveling about the country with my dog, sending pictures home of 'far away' places. Now that I have added 5 other countries to my list of travels in the last 5 years, many of my friends, in addition to family, claim to live vicarious lives through me.
