Pemba
PEMBA ISLAND

Pemba, the northern island, is about 65 km long and 25 km wide and is located about 57 km from the mainland and 50 km north-east of Zanzibar.
Pemba, meaning "green island" - it is an island of hills and valleys, with rich soils and lush vegetation of rice padies bordered by clove plantations.

Along the coast, ruins of ancient mosques and tombs are still intact - many of these date back to between 10th and 13th century, when Pemba was important to the East African trade network.

Along the coast Bird Watching is rewarding, diving is considered, by experienced divers, to be some of the most exciting and the beaches are solitary stretches of prisine coral sands.

Ngezi natural forest was declared a conservation area in 1950 making it home to a diversity of species of fauna and flora. The Flying Fox, the Pemba Vervet and the Red Colobus Monkeys make Ngezi their habitat.

Pemba should be the exiting highlight of any holiday for those who are seeking an unspoint hideaway.
