Comparison of SDLC & Prototype Approach

System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) :

Overall process of developing information systems through a multistep process from investigation of initial requirements through analysis, design, implementation and maintenance.

Prototyping

Is the process of quickly putting together a working model (a prototype) in order to test various aspects of the design, illustrate ideas or features and gather early user feedback. Prototyping is often treated as an integral part of the development process where it is believed to reduce project risk and cost.

System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Prototyping
Advantages :

1-Good control

2-foucus on tradeoff

3-foucus on goals and target

Advantage :

1- reduce project risk and cost

2-acheved design goals

3-deploy quickly

disadvantage:

1- lack of needed skill

2-Incomplete specification

3-too time consuming

4-lack of management and user involvement

disadvantages :

1-hard time understanding that the finished design will not be produced for some time

2-Designers and end users can focus too much on user interface design and too little on producing a system that serves the business process.

3-The developers may lose focus on the real purpose of the prototype and compromise the quality of the product.
