| D. Lavallee, better known as Rook, was born in Massachusetts in a small town, lived in a small town until the age of 9 & then moved to another small town. Rook was & is a tomboy at heart. Growing up she was fascinated with nature, animals, creepy crawly things, Greek & Egyptian Mythology, the supernatural & just plain strange stuff. She grew up under the encouragement of a supportive mother who saw nothing wrong with her daughter's obsession with drawing, music, books & fantasy, in fact she encouraged her to follow her own path & stay true to herself. Though Rook was told by her high school art teacher that she wasn't talented enough for the school art classes, but her mother did not give up on her daughter & instead paid for Rook to have private drawing lessons. This faith in her talents & support caused Rook to put her head down, believe in herself & plow ahead in spite of opposition. Eventually she was able to enroll in art classes in high school but seemed to not follow the norm anyways. She compiled a portfolio & applied to several Art Colleges. Rook attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY where she earned a BFA in Printmaking. Rook worked in several Printing Studios & Workshops in NY & CT but she decided that printing other artist's work was not her path in life. In 1997 she started Freelancing & supporting her search for employment as a Freelance Artist & with her Woodburned boxes & other images. Rook has done illustrations for the newsletters of several non-profit organizations since 1990. Her illustrations can be found in several small magazines such as Surrender Dorothy, Black Lily, InkSlinger and Trade All Eternity the poetry chap book of Nancy E. Martindale. Rook has had the pleasure of having her art added to an online card game known as Conquer: The Age of Fantasy , grace stationary, both as the cover of notebooks & as border art for writing paper, as well as Chapter Illustrations in the novel Dark Lord. Rook is currently working on her own line of cards for OM3 Studios as well as working at Conventions, Arts fairs & Renaissance Faires with her friends. Rook's woodburned items & other goodies can be seen on ebay from time to time, represented by tsigma. Take a look. |
