| Society for Creative Anachronism I belong to the Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA. It began in California in 1966. It's still mainly based on North America, but has branches in Australia, Japan and Europe. The SCA divides itself into "kingdoms." My Kingdom is An Tir (the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada, plus all of Washington and Oregon, and the panhandle of Idaho in the U.S.) Within the Kingdom of An Tir are two Principalities (Avacal and Summits), one Crown Principality (an area well on its way to becoming a full-fledged Principality, with its own Prince and Princess and administration), and 3 Regions. The local area I live in, the Shire of Appledore, is within the Crown Principality of the North. |

| Other Living History Groups There are an amazing number of living history and reenactment groups around. For a glimpse of the scope of living history, try the Histrenact site. I've listed just a small number of groups who re-enact and research the time period and cultures I'm interested in, which is Britain between the withdrawal of the Roman Legions (410 A.D.) and the Norman Conquest. All of them are based in the U.K. Most of the sites listed will lead you to related groups and sites. Regia Anglorum is the largest group, with the broadest range of interests and the widest scope. They work with most aspects of this period, although they mainly focus on the Saxons and the Vikings. They have satellite groups, however, that are more specific in their interests, such as one in the Strathclyde area of southern Scotland. Regia Anglorum is very concerned with authenticity and accuracy in research and representation. Another group that specializes in the Angles and Saxons during this period is Angelcynn. The only group I've found so far that deals primarily with the British rather than the invaders during this time period is Combrogi. Also, unlike most other reenactment groups, they do not deal with battle or military aspects, but with the lives of ordinary people and everyday life. |
