Singapore will set up a precision engineering center of innovation to help small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in this sector, a senior official announced on Wednesday. The one-stop technology assistance center will be led by SIMTech, a manufacturing research institute, and funded by the Standards, Productivity and Innovation Board (SPRING Singapore), S. Iswaran, minister of State for Trade and Industry, said at an international conference of precision engineering. >> more

SINGAPORE : Fixed asset investments in precision engineering will reach about S$400 million this year, according to forecasts from the Economic Development Board (EDB). Speaking at an industry event on Thursday, the EBD estimated that about 5,000 jobs in the sector would be created in the next four years. Incorporated in 1981, Singapore Aerospace Manufacturing Pte Ltd (SAM) is an established designer and manufacturer of aerospace products.
Today, SAM employs over 500 staff and operates four manufacturing facilities worldwide: two in Singapore, one in
Suzhou, China, and one in Waakirchen, Germany. The company"s products include actuators, engine mounts, airfoils, engine cases and landing gears. These are supplied to global players such as Boeing, Honeywell, Pratt & Whitney, and Rolls-Royce. SAM's manufacturing activities in Singapore include engine mount assemblies, brackets, links and structural parts for use on Airbus and Boeing regional and business aircrafts. It also focuses on high pressure compressor airfoils and complex engine cases of up to 56 inches in diameter.SAM has over 20 years of expertise in the precision machining of high temperature alloys such as hardened steels, titanium and nickelbased alloys of complex geometry. Its core capabilities include CNC turning and five-axis milling.

An established brand name in the machine tool industry, Makino has its Asia-Pacific headquarters (outside of Japan), Makino Asia Pte Ltd, in Singapore. Makino Asia, managed entirely by Singaporeans, is one of the largest machine tool builders here. Makino was the first to manufacture Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining centres in Singapore. Makino Asia has since successfully designed and developed several CNC machine tool models and has also manufactured and introduced several top selling vertical machining centres from Singapore.

areas such as
photonics, semiconductor, biomedical sciences, automotive, advanced displays and alternative energy. This effort is supported by research institutes and institutes of higher learning which are actively developing capabilities in nanotechnology, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), embedded software, display materials and electronics packaging.

Design Technology Institute (DTI), launched
in 2002, supports the PE industry by training
talents in product design and development,
and conducting industry-driven research and
education in design technology.
Through its three-pronged strategy of
education, applied research and direct industrial
support, DTI plays an important role in enhancing
the global competitiveness of industries in
Singapore, including PE.
A joint venture between National University
of Singapore (NUS) and Technische Universiteit
Eindhoven (TU/e), DTI offers a joint Master of
Technological Design degree programme focused
and manage design with other business and production
processes seamlessly through the Internet without incurring
additional investments.
The Institute also enhances skillsets in the PE industry under
the Technology Infusion Programme by offering short, advanced
courses to engineers and technicians.
SIMTech has also launched a training programme for tool
and die makers in the use of 3D CAD/CAM for product design.
Within a year of the programme�s launch, it trained 500 technicians
from 200 companies, enabling them to undertake product design
and development activities.

DTI also supports the industry through industrial courses,
applied research projects and short-term consultancy projects. The
courses aim to develop capabilities in rapid product development,

Applied research at DTI focuses on rapid and innovative product
development technologies, mechatronics and embedded systems.
Short-term consultancy projects are undertaken by DTI to help
industries find quick solutions to immediate problems. Through
such projects, DTI has helped a number of Singapore-based companies
