VIRUS- A basic computer virus is a piece of software designed by a programmer. This software will tag itself onto a program on your PC (e.g- a word document or spreadsheet). Each time you use the infected program the virus starts working, when the virus is activated it can spread very quickly. With the emergence of 'e-mail' a whole new world of virus was born.
FAMOUS VIRUSES- Many viruses have crept through security defences and caused havoc, check out my references for a few sites showing these famous infections.

WORMS- Again, a worm is another piece of software made by a mad programmer. They are built around the discovery of holes in security systems and set out to infect networks. Once this hole in security is found, the worm will reproduce itself and set out to find more of these 'holes'.
FAMOUS WORMS - Worms are famous for being surprisingly quick at replicating themselves, the 'code red' worm (July 2001) replicated itself 250,000 times in just nine hours!! There are some more references on worms here.

TROJAN HORSES - These viruses do not spread like many other infections, instead they advertise themselves to be an attractive free program (anti-virus or games). Once you click on the link, your PC is infected. These do not affect as many people as worms because they can be quickly removed from the web
FAMOUS TROJANS - Other than the famous captors of Troy, a few trojan viruses have caused panic in the PC world. AOLGOLD disguised itself as an AOL trial, but information got sent to the programmer as soon as the account got set up.
