ACTIVITY 2

Evaluating Job Descriptions

1. Access the Corporate View Web site.

2 Select the Human Resources & Management link from the Corporate View Intranet Home page.

3. Click the About Human Resources link and read the description of HR.

4. Click on the Current Job Openings @ TeleView link. These job descriptions are varied, ranging from administrative assistant to director. There are several job descriptions from each mission-critical function in the corporation.

5. Create a one-page job description in an attractive format. Use the format of the job descriptions on the Intranet as a general guide. Make the job description concise but use descriptive words and phrases to make the job sound interesting and challenging. Include the seven parts of a job description listed below.

Parts of a job description

1. Job title 2. Date posted and date closed

3. Department or group name. 4. Brief description of the job environment

5. Location of employment 6. Main responsibilities

7. Education, skills, and experience

 

ACTIVITY 3

Writing Good Interview Questions

1. In a word processing file, choose three of the super seven qualifications for employment listed below. Under each of the skills, write four definitions and four interview questions for that skill. Look at this from the perspective of someone working in HR or one of the other mission-critical functions at TelView.

ACTIVITY 4

SCANS: The Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills

In the early 1990s, the U.S. Department of Labor sponsored a study by SCANS (The Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills) to determine what knowledge and skills are needed in modern business.

  1. Search for copies of the SCANS documents and summaries at http://infinia.wpmc.jhu.edu/. At this address, you can find the SCANS America 2000 publications and review this important body of work. Pay attention to everything written by Dr. Arnold Packer, former Assistant Secretary of Labor and coauthor of Workforce 2000. You can also visit the U.S. Department of Labor Internet site at http://dol.gov.
  2. List the SCANS competencies – Workplace Competencies and Foundation Skills --in a word processing document. Explain why you feel these are important competencies. Describe which of these skills you have already obtained and how you can work to improve on the skills you are lacking.
  3. Send as hard copy through e-mail to your instructor.
