Choose five of the specialty areas listed above. Using the Internet, find five laws that deal with each specialty area. Create a table, spreadsheet, or chart to organize your answers.

 

ACTIVITY 3

  1. Access the Corporate View Web site.
  2. Select the Legal Services link from the Corporate View Intranet Home page.
  3. Click the Patent, Trademark, and Copyright Resources link. Select the Copyright Basics link. Use this document to answer question 4 through 8.

Key your answers to question 4 through 12 in a word processing file.

  1. What is a copyright, and who can claim a copyright?
  2. Define a "work made for hire."
  3. List the eight categories of work protected under copyright law.
  4. What is not protected under copyright law?
  5. Read the How to Secure Copyright section of Copyright Basics and explain the statement "Copyright is secured automatically when the work is created."
  6. Patents are handled in a manner different from copyrights. Return to the Patent, Trademark, and Copyright Resources list on the Legal Services page, and select the Functions of the Patent and Trademark Office link. Briefly describe the PTO and explain its functions.
  7. Return to the Patent, Trademark, and Copyright Resources list and click the What is a Patent? link. How does the PTO define a patent for an invention?
  8. How does the PTO define a copyright? A trademark or servicemark?
  9. Return to the Patent, Trademark, and Copyright Resources list and click the What Can Be Patented link. In your own words, explain what can be patented. Are there any things that cannot be patented? Explain.
