St Andrews Church Photographs

These superb photographs were supplied by Mr Charles Shrewsbury of Ormskirk, Lancashire. Mr Shrewsbury is the son of the second vicar, Cheverton Shrewsbury, and grandson of the first vicar, Edwin S Crane, who between them ministered in the village for more than eighty years.

The top picture was taken in about 1908 by Mr E S Mann, a Whitwick photographer, and appeared on the front cover of church magazines before the first world war. Note the shelter over the south door, which was replaced by the porch in 1911.

Charles Shrewsbury describes the second photograph as, "the snowy beauty of God's world in Thringstone". This magical scene was captured in January 1952 by the widely acclaimed local photographer, Peter Brotherhood, who took the picture from an upstairs bedroom of his parents' home on Loughborough Road. We hope to present more of Peter's art in due course.

Alas, it is no longer possible to view the church from this angle : the Glebe Field was sold for private development in about 1965 and is now occupied by three bungalows. Gone also is the tree in the foreground.
