"Recognition"

by Lianne Olive Hennig

There is a sparkle in the night that lures me to its side -

Flashing colours, burning bright -  this is no time to hide.

My tired eyes can't watch too long, yet cannot turn away -

One half of my heart would wait for day, the other would stay...

And sing the song.  Time's held me in its gentle hand when I'd

Thought I'd have to fight.  I realise I've been lost in

A dreamer's land - sudden knowledge came tonight as fresh

Wisdom, in a book I read, gave new insight so profound.

How can castles soar in the air when their base must be the

Ground?  A year I've spent studying my talent, glowing

Wanly.  Its value found respect; its delights impressed

Upon me.  Yet what did I do this new year and after

Study came to an end?  I waited for the energy

To spur the rediscovered friend.  Did I wait for new

Energy when I had essays to put in?  No, I

Sat and worked until the words tumbled out a win.  Why, an

Idea that is good may not inspire today but that does

Not mean I cannot sit and write it, anyway.  A

Short story or a poem will fill the gap in time -

For the written word comes more easily, well exercised.
