"Obit to a fish"
by Lianne Olive Hennig
A fish is floating in the tank –
(The biggest one of all…)
I smelt that something slightly stank –
(Oh, hear the last knell fall!)
The froth surrounding it is white.
It’s eyes are glazed all grey.
It must’ve carked during the night –
(Poor ‘Guts’ has had its day…)
The other fish around it
Swim fast and merrily –
(They think, “Now we can have a bit
More tucker for our tea!)
No more will this fish flip and flop
When I feed the gawking brood.
No more will it thump the top
In its eagerness for food.
A fish is floating in the tank –
(Poor ‘Guts’ has had its day…)
It even more than slightly stank –
The fish has passed away.
