| Owen Thomas William Britton |
| Owen was born on the 19th February 1999 and everything appeared to be fine, he scored 9 on his apgar test. Later that day we were allowed home from hospital and I continued to breastfeed him. I'd say that the first two days he was like any other baby. On day three,he started to vomit all his feeds up and was sleepy all the time. When the doctor came round he just said that he must be a sleepy baby and to make the most of it. I had to wake Owen up for every feed, and it was hard to get him to take the feed. When I eventually got some down him, it came straight back up. I carried on like this until he was 8 days old as I'd had numerous visits to the doctor and he had reasurred me that everything was fine.
On day 8 I could not wake Owen up at all and I went straight to the doctors again. This time they believed me that their was something wrong and he told me to take Owen to our nearest hospital, which was Pinderfields. As soon as we arrived, numerous doctors and nurses all gathered around us taking bloods and spinal fluid. He was then put into a heated incubater and we were asked lots of questions. Our doctor at this hospital was the one who told us that owen had a metabolic disorder and he was brilliant. He then transfered us to Leeds general infirmary and this is where we realised that it was serious. Owen was put into intensive care and a doctor from Manchester who specializes in metabolics told us that it was a condition called ASA. They explained that they had to put him on dialisis to get rid of the ammonia quickly and that he may not survive. After all that Owen proved he was a fighter and was out of intensive care 4 days later and was put onto a children's ward until we had learnt all the information we needed to know to care for him. Owen is now 5 years old and is such a happy go lucky child and always has a smile on his face. He has recently been potty trained and has a developmental age of a 3 year old. Owen's visits to hospital seem to be getting less and less as he gets older. |
