Vision Best Buddies ambitiously envisions a world where people with intellectual disabilities are so successfully integrated into our schools, our workplaces and our general communities that our current efforts and services will be unnecessary. Until that vision becomes a reality, our mission is to educate middle school, high school and college students, community citizens and corporations, and employers about the emotional, functional, and natural needs and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities.
History of Service Best Buddies was born when Founder Anthony K. Shriver recognized the unjustified lack of opportunity for people with intellectual disabilities to socialize with their peers without intellectual disabilities, as well as the power and impact of friendship in developing their self-esteem and improving their outlook on society.
A college student himself, Shriver knew that his fellow colleagues had the energy and commitment to positively transform their communities. His inspiration to bring both groups together created Best Buddies.
Today, Best Buddies offers six programs: Best Buddies Middle Schools, Best Buddies High Schools, Best Buddies Colleges, Best Buddies Citizens, e-Buddies and Best Buddies Jobs.
Lifetime of Support Best Buddies International is a worldwide organization offering more than just the opportunity for students to participate in high school or college chapters. Once you join Best Buddies International, you can become a part of Best Buddies forever. Our adult programs include Best Buddies Citizens and Best Buddies Jobs in numerous major cities. However, Best Buddies also greatly appreciates and needs donors, people who continue to give so that the gift of friendship can be expanded across the country and even worldwide. For more information on staying involved in Best Buddies by becoming an active alumni, receiving our international newsletter, and/or donating, please contact your Program Manager or Best Buddies Headquarters at 1-800-89-BUDDY. |
