| More than 7.5 million Americans have intellectual disabilities. Over 100,000 newborn babies are added to this number annually. | A person with developmental disabilities is one who, from childhood, matures at a below average rate. | Testing methods have various cutoff points for the diagnosis of intellectual disabilities. These can range from an IQ of 70 to an IQ of 80. However, IQ is not the only criteria for diagnosis. | Things to remember when meeting people with intellectual disabilities for the first time: RELAX! If you dont know what to do or say, allow him/her to put you at ease. Remember he/she is a person first...like everyone else. Treat adults as adults. Be considerate of the extra time it might take for him or her to get things done. Let the individual set the pace for walking or talking. Speak directly to the person with the disability and not through a third party. Most importantly, they are PEOPLE with disabilities, NOT disabled people. |
