The Old Town Water District was formed as a part of the Bangor Railway and Electric Company in the late 1800's. When it was initially formed water was taken from the Penobscot River.

The raw water that is now filtered and served to OTWD customers is taken from groundwater wells located on Spring St. and Bennoch Road.

Weston Haskell has been superintendant of the district since February 1997. Since that time the OTWD has made great strides in improving the district's facilities.

The following is an explanation of some of the improvements the OTWD has made to the distribution system:

In 1998 the OTWD replaced a rivercrossing from Indian Islamd to Milford. In order to replace this watermain the OTWD needed to have a new agreement with the Penobscot Nation since the main traversed the end of the Island. A mutually beneficial agreement was struck by both parties in 1998. In order to take full advantage of the increased size and flow of the 12 inch main in Milford, the OTWD needed to replace other pipes. The improvements ended up replacing pipes on Call Street, Water Street and Mill Street in Milford. This was a total replacement of approximately 3000 feet of water-main.

In 2000 the OTWD built a new 500,00 gallon standpipe and again extended the improvements to include a new 16 inch main to tie into Stillwater Avenue. The addition of this standpipe increased storage capabilities by 28%.

In 2001 the OTWD completed four major projects: 1) A second new standpipe increasin strorage capabilities by another 500,000 gallons. 2.) 13,000 feet of new 12 inch mains on Bennoch Road, replacing 6 inch mains and transmitting the water from our Sibley Well to the treatment plant thus improving quality and consistency. 3.) STAY TUNED
