Old tins and enamel signs
Brothers David & James Fowler, formerly of Cellardyke, Scotland, established their grocery business in 1854. Their store was located in King William St, between North Terrace and Rundle Street. From humble beginnings grew a wholesale giant.

In the years to follow, Fowler's range of products were manufactured at their flour mill at Mile End, factories at North Tce, Adelaide, Pt. Adelaide, and Fremantle, Western Australia.

The company expanded their extensive operations in 1887, with the purchase of Harford's Confectionery Works in Mill St, Adelaide, which traded in the style of "The Lion Cconfectionery Works," which amalgamated with Walton's in 1904. In the same year (1887), they also purchased The London Condiment Company's works at Maylands; Hanton's Jam factory at Fullarton; and built a factory at Nurootpa for jam making.

Fowlers used the following trade marks: Lion 1886; Swan tea and coffee 1890; Amgoorie tea 1894; Owl tea 1896; Ranee tea in 1897; French coffee in 1899; Singhala tea in 1901; Amanda tea in 1901; Kurrajong tea and coffee in 1901; Coronation confectionery 1902; Golden Leaf tea 1904; and Lymine cordial in 1905.
